Coaching is defined by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) as follows: “A partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. The process of coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity, and leadership.”
Rather than being the “expert” leading the client to the solution like a therapist, a professional coach places emphasis on the client finding the solution. The coaching relationship is collaborative in nature, with clearly defined roles for the coach and the client. The path to achieving the desired goals resides within the client and is discovered through the coaching relationship.
The body of available research on the benefits of coaching is encouraging. More empirical research is needed to improve our understanding of the most effective processes for coaches to use when working across a diverse group of clients with differing needs.
According to the International Coaching Foundation (ICF), organizations that invest in coaching for their employees see a significant return on their investment. There is a growing body of evidence showing the value of coaching in improving the productivity of employees, the acquisition of goals and overall workplace culture. These kinds of improvements, in turn, improve the retention of employees and the efficacy of the organization’s purpose, whether it is improved academic outcomes for students in education or profits in the business sector.
Individuals seeking coaching to address personal goals or life transitions most often report that they are able to achieve more than they believed was possible and often exceed the goals they envisioned for themselves. Data collected by ICF indicates that 80% of individuals receiving coaching services report improved self-confidence, and 70% report improved work performance, better relationships, and more effective communication skills.
The most effective coaching occurs when the client has confidence in the process and the individual coach selected.
